Keeping Tropical Fish

This choice is not as easy as going to a store and purchasing one fish each from all the attractive fishes because they may not be just well-matched. This is very important for you (like a ‘landlord’ in this case) to have a proper plan about these things because the tank may not...

Making Money Selling Aquarium Fish
By Josie

An interesting way of making money is to breed aquarium fish and sell them. You can sell the baby fish to your friends but not too many people want to buy aquarium fish. You should ideally try to sell it back to the person you bought your fish from and that way he might be interested in procuring fish from someone who is a local supplier so that he doesn’t have to pay freight charges.

You should start off with a lot of patience as you will need some time to figure out how to successfully keep fish as pets and then learn how to breed them. Instead of buying a lot of fish to breed, start off by learning how to take care of them and maintain them first. Starting breeding is not a very difficult to achieve task as once you set up your fish tank and you keep at least ten fish in it, there are bound to be a few males and a few females together and nature will do the rest, provided the fish are healthy. If you want to stimulate spawning, you can change one-fifth of the water daily. The new water must be free of chlorine and of the same temperature as the water in your aquarium otherwise the fish won’t be able to breed due to stress.

One of the easiest kind of fish to breed are mollies, for any molly can breed with a molly of the opposite sex, provided they are healthy even though they might be of a different shape or size. They do require a big aquarium however, for they will not breed unless there is plenty of water. Also female mollies will give birth to developed baby mollies and not eggs like other fish. Up to eight mollies can be accommodated in a 40 gallon tank of water and you will need to add a tablespoon of aquarium salt per five gallons of water. The best temperature to keep mollies at is 80° Fahrenheit.

Female mollies breed best on freeze dried blood worms as fish food. You should also give them a few live black worms per day. You can also give them dry fish flakes and brine shrimp to nibble at. Do ensure that there are not too many males in the tank, and the numbers of female mollies are greater, as otherwise the male mollies will chase the female mollies and that will prevent them from breeding as they will get stressed out. Once they are ready to give birth, you need to remove the pregnant mollies into another tank or a net breeder so that other fish don’t eat up the tiny baby mollies, which are called fry. The babies need to be fed three times a day with powdered fish flakes and when they are an inch long after a month or so; you can release them from the net.

If you are planning on raising a breed called Pink Convicts, you will need to get an even number of fish, with an equal number of males and females. Once they grow up, they will pair off and nest in a cave under a rock or a hollow and then the female will lay eggs and guard and hatch them in 3-4 days. They are very tough fish and are quite aggressive even as babies. Angels also breed in the same manner and as pairs. If you buy a mature pair, their pairing might break when they move to a new tank. Pairs can be identified as two fish that chase out other fish from their territory.

Fish keeping and breeding is quite a rewarding activity and you get to learn as well about how nature works. If you become a breeder as well, you can profit and learn at the same time.
